Sweet or savoury? You all must know by now that I can’t choose and that I’m all about sweet AND savoury. I am a Libra, after all. So when I had found myself with a surplus of danjou pears and a package of bleu cheese that my ex-boyfriend left n my fridge, I knew I had to make something awesome with it.

Pear and bleu cheese is such a classic combination. My favourite sandwich shop downtown makes this wonderful pear, gorgonzola and prosciutto sandwich on a walnut bread with olive oil and balsamic glaze that is absolutely to die for. It’s the most incredible sandwich I have ever had. Because of that amazing sandwich, I knew that pear and bleu cheese would be a match made in heaven pairing.

I was having my girlfriends over for a French-themed brunch the other weekend and I was running out of time for dessert. My mind was quick to think: “What’s quick and easy and I can whip up in no time?”. I immediately thought of a crumble.

Crumbles are super easy to make and you can make with virtually any fruit. Apples, peaches, pears, blackberries, raspberries, blueberries, cherries…you name it! Having this in mind helped me bring me at ease with the time crunch. I quickly chopped up the pears, made the crumble and baked it in the oven while we were finishing the savoury portion of our brunch.

And it was gone within seconds. To say that everybody loved it was an understatement. And with a classic flavour combination as this, can you really blame me!?

PEAR & BLEU CHEESE CRUMBLE - serves 2 to share

  • 2 danjou pears, diced

  • 1/3 cup dessert wine (ie. port, moscato, late harvest, etc.)

  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon

  • 1 tbsp all-purpose flour

  • 2 tbsp brown sugar

  • 4 tbsp butter, cold and cut into pieces

  • 4 tbsp all purpose flour

  • 4 tbsp quick rolled oats

  • 2 tbsp slivered almonds, toasted

  • 1 tbsp brown sugar

  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon

  • 3 tbsp bleu cheese, crumbled

  1. Preheat the oven to 350F. In a 5” round ramekin or baking dish, mix the first 5 ingredients together (pear, flour, cinnamon, sugar, dessert wine).

  2. In a small separate bowl, mix the rest of the ingredients besides the bleu cheese until you form a rough crumble.

  3. Place on top of the pear mixture and bake for 30 minutes or until bubbling.

  4. Remove from the oven and place the bleu cheese on top of the crumble and broil for 2 minutes. Remove from the oven and serve immediately.
